Black men are always the last hired and the first fired. However, lately they have had an even more difficult time getting hired. The employment opportunities have dropped to their lowest level in thirty years. This can be attributed to a number of factors.

"Over the last fifteen years, there has been a decline in almost every industry with jobs for the under educated man," says Steel of the University of California at L A. The increase in the number of jobs going overseas left an emptiness in the manufacturing industry. During the nineties there was a drop of twenty percentage points for black men in manufacturing jobs. The decline for white men was only twelve percentage points.

Trade schools and unions are not welcoming Blacks. Black males are not going on to higher education for any number of reasons. One is they must first make money to be able to afford to go. Many construction building jobs go to the union. Black numbers in unions are down too. If you have just a high school diploma, there is only a 50% chance of being employed.

This unemployment is at a crisis level. What does the future whole? These young men will not be able to support themselves or their families. As a young Black male myself, I worry that the joblessness will drive some to get money any way that they can.
