Buying A Web Site That Is Really Established
You are keen to buy a web site business and you have seen lots of them for sale – particularly on auction sites. So how do you ensure that what you buying is really an established site? Here is your check list:1) Check that the domain name belongs to the owner and has been established for a long time. Web sites take a long time to become established. As a search engine optimization consultant, I am always getting asked what the average webmaster can do to improve their ranking on the search engines. My answer is always the same; hire me!

There are some very simple techniques that most webmasters can follow, that will have an effect on their search rankings. Here is my list of the top 6 techniques that are free and quick to implement, but can make a remarkable improvement to your web site in the search results.

    1. Title Tags

The title tag is contained between the head tags on your page:

<head><title>your title here</title></head> Search engines use the information contained within the tag as the title for your listing on their results pages.

As this is the most prominent line on the search results page, make sure your title tag contains a compelling description of your site, which will make searchers want to click. You also want to make sure that it is relevant and unique to the page it leads to.

Your title should also contain good keywords and key phrases, which searchers are likely to use when looking for your product or service.

The two most popular search engines are Yahoo! and Google. Google will display up to 66 characters in a title before cropping, Yahoo! will display up to 120. When designing a title, keep it to less than 120 characters, but ensure that it still makes sense when cropped at 66 characters.

    2. Keywords and key phrases

Research shows that people who buy a product or service online are most likely to use key phrases 2-3 words in length.

When researching your keywords and key phrases it is best to put together a list of around 10-15 key phrases for each page, each key phrase containing 2-3 words; these are the phrases that you want to be found under in the results pages.

The keyword and key phrases should be reflected in the content of your page, if your page is about blue widgets, then your content should contain the words blue widgets.

You can also put keywords and key phrases within the keywords tag in the head of the page as a comma separated list:

<head><meta name=”keywords” content=”blue widgets, yellow widgets” /><head> It is thought that most search engines do not pay too much attention to this tag; however, it is a good place to store this information as an aide memoir.

    Boost Your Current Conversion Rate

This is the description that you will see for your site in the search results, so make sure that it is well written, contains your keywords for that particular page and compels the searcher to click!

    4. Headings tags

Wherever you have headings in the main body of your page, it is best practice to use headings tags. These tags are represented using h1 to h6 as follows:

<h1>Heading 1<h1> <h2>Heading 2<h2> … <h6>Heading 6</h6> As you may expect, h1 is the largest and most important heading, leading down to the smallest h6.

By using the h1 tag early on in your page surrounding a key phrase rich heading, you are giving yourself a better chance of being found for that phrase.

    5. Links

By gaining good quality inbound links to your page; search engines view you as good authority on your subject, thus improving your search result positioning.

It is important that the inbound or back links are from good quality sites, with some relevance to your web site subject. For example, a site about mortgages could benefit from links from banks, estate agents and insurance companies, but not leisure centres.

Some web site owners will request a link from your site in exchange for one from theirs; this is termed link exchanging or reciprocal linking. One way links are better to have, but harder to get.

It has been shown that having a few quality links to trusted sites can improve your rankings. Trusted sites are the acknowledged subject authority in their area, such as the BBC, BT or the Bank of England. Again, make sure that these outbound links are relevant to your subject.

    6. Content

It is said that content is king, ad that really does apply to your web pages. Accurate well written content with plenty of keywords and key phrases will attract visitors and search engines alike.

Best practice is to place your main keywords or key phrases within the first two paragraphs to gain most weight with the search engines.

Most importantly, write for your intended audience, not the search engines. This will give you a much better chance of converting your visitors into customers.

There are of course many more techniques that can be used to dramatically improve the search engine positioning, the few simple methods I have shown you will certainly get you started on the right track.
