Passive Candidates: Are You An Active or Passive Job Searcher tanding look and feel for our projects. What does it mean to be a passive candidate? In the recruitment world, recruiters and hiring managers use the term “passive candidate” to describe someone who is not actively looking for a job.A passive candidate is typically someone who isn’t looking for a new job but who would (or might) consider a good opportunity if one arose. This is opposed to being an active candidate, someone who is actively searching for a new job. Many in the recruitment world talk about how a passive candidate is preferable to an active candidate. Many of them argue about the merits of this statement and wh At a recent AIGA event, I sat across from a designer who had taken my idea one step further. Add a contrasting flysheet to your standard black and white booklet, a simple spot color printing or blind embossing and create a memorable impression. Discover Textures Why Women Shop We hear it on the news every day. The economy is doing much better, but you and I know budgets for paper and printing are still tight and the increase in postal charges is always a concern. Many designers are still challenged to find more creative ways to maximize their resources.I recently read a book titled “Why Women Shop” by Minahan and Beverland. An appropriate topic as companies and businesses race to snag the female market. It is common knowledge that women are a formidable force in purchasing products not only for themselves, but also on behalf of their family. The old worn stereotype of the na?ve and gullible female shopper just doesn’t wash anymore.I think women have always been knowledgeable and astute shoppers. Today, however, women are independent shoppers, making decision on major purchases without a male insight (except for the sales assistant of course). Women are the Reduced page counts and conservative print quantities are just some of the solutions. When it comes to paper, unusual finishes and surfaces, as well as the use of metallics and translucents are adding flair to one-color print jobs. Value-Added Excitement Over the last few years, there has been a growing interest in specialty papers used in print projects. Specialty papers are a vivid contrast to computer-generated design and corporations are now eager to use them to create a softer image for themselves. The new generation of production techniques make it easier to convert, print and finish these papers. Metallics Translucents When I lived in Australia and started my own design studio, I needed a business card. Australia has 18 million inhabitants and only five paper merchants for the entire country. So, paper choices were nowhere near as extensive as in the U.S. I fell in love with a translucent Edward Dunlop paper with fine, white, slightly embossed stripes. Though the paper was noticeably thinner than the average business card and the price was higher, I took the chance. Every time I handed out my card, I watched people feel the paper for its stripes and hold it up against the light (yes, it really was a translucent paper). Everyone commented on the cards and that is exactly what we designers want; an outstanding look and feel for our projects. I immediately gave my preprogrammed reply about passion and dedication and hard work. After taking some time later to ponder the question a little deeper (I normally operate in shallow waters), I came up with a more detailed checklist for entrepreneurial success. This is by no means a definitive list, but I'd be willing to bet that if you don't have at least a majority of these traits, your chances of business success will be greatly diminished. You must be self motivated. If you don't have the wherewit Translucents When I lived in Australia and started my own design studio, I needed a business card. So, what’s the big deal about the Yellow Pages, anyway?Well, if you are in business and have, or are considering, an ad, what do you really know about this unusual media?
