Our calendars are filled with dates in which we remember some devastating events that happened to us as well as some atrocities that were done to us or to those we love.

Some of these events happened either at home or somewhere else. We remember only too well devastating earthquakes, tsunamis, fires, volcano eruptions, hurricanes and what not. And we probably know someone who knows someone who lost a loved one in one of those. Our remembrance of these events is usually that of sorrow and sadness.

There are also those events that comprise of human suffering provoked by other humans. We are very much aware of the atrocities committed toward us out of hatred, prejudice, greed, intolerance, ignorance, and so on.

Every country has at least a day of mourning. In the US alone there are days to remember the Holocaust, Sep. 11, Pearl Harbor, Veterans of War, JFK, and hundreds others. Interestingly, though not always, these holidays usually celebrate some war or terrorist event. But, let's not discount the mourning of individuals who lose their loved ones daily because of neglect, violence, incompetence, intolerance, etc.

Yes, we mourn ours while wishing to destroy others.

While we condemn violence toward ourselves in any possible form, we, on the other hand, condone the same violence toward those who have done us harm, keeping, therefore, the cycle of violence in motion forever. It never stops. How come it is all right for us to use violence toward other people? Are they so different from us? Don't they feel the same? Don't they also want to find peace of mind, happiness, prosperity, abundance, loving relationships and joy? Why is it ok to wish revenge toward others and not ok for the others to wish revenge toward us?

Until we learn to forgive those who have done us harm, we will never find peace. And we need not go far from home on this. Think about your life. Think about those who have caused you grievance; those who tried to harm you; those who were unjust to you; those who stole from you; those who took advantage of you; those who mocked and humiliated you; those who were unkind, uncooperative, unsupportive, and unhelpful?

Can you say to yourself: "Though I may never forget what you have done to me, I choose to forgive you?" Can you put so much love in your heart that when it overflows you beam it toward those who have hurt you?

Only when we forgive those close to us we will be able to forgive all others and finally find peace.
