Researchers combed through the records of these patients, looking at outcomes of the surgery. This study looked at the records of the first 100 laparoscopic Roux-en-Y surgeries performed in their center, and compared them to the results of the next 650 surgeries that were performed later, after the clinic had more experience with this type of procedure.

Among the patient records that were reviewed, it was found that the first 100 gastric bypass surgeries had 26 major complications, including one death. The percentage of patients with complications for the other group went down to 13%, and only two patients out of 650 died as a result of the procedure.

The number of wound infections went down from 8% in the first 100 patients, to 2% in the other group. There were no bowl obstructions in the second group, while 5% of the first 100 patients had this serious complication from their surgery.
