We have all heard horrendous stories of how over regulation crushes small business people who compete with the big dogs in various markets. There are publications and even television programmes dedicated to peoples success in running their chosen business, a business that they enjoy being involved with and are normally shown earning plenty of extra money because of it.
However, every now and again, one hears of the downside of trying to run a business, I had an experience of this just before Christmas last year when a subscriber to my newsletter sent me a letter which asked to be taken off of my list and could he possibly have a refund for unsent copies. He stated that there was nothing wrong with the newsletter, he was a subscriber to several home business publications and had asked to me removed from them all. He explained that he had been trying for several years to be a success in working from home but that he had finally decided to call it a day.
It's a shame when somebody gives up altogether after trying so hard, he had spent 'thousands' promoting the various business opportunities which he had listed in the letter. To be honest, I wouldn't have given the opportunities that he'd mentioned house room, very weak and not all were what I'd describe as being genuine and legal.
If only somebody was around to advice him on this he probably would still want to make a go of it and would, no doubt, be earning from working at home.
The investment into mailing lists, mail shots, advertising, stationery, telephone calls, general marketing, petrol etc. etc. had all gone to waste as the writer could not make anything work to the degree that it could be called a success. In other words he didn't earn any money out of any of the businesses that he had tried so hard to promote.
Reading his letter to me, I could tell that he had fallen for the advertising that was used to promote the various opportunities.
When they state that you can 'make thousands of pounds every week from your kitchen table' you should never take it literally because, although you probably can in theory, it isn't usually as simple as the advertisement leads you to believe. Now this may sound terrible because if the advert states something, then surely, it must be true. I always make 'allowances' for this type of advert by allowing the 'attract readers mode', this is the part of the advertisement that gains my attention and makes me read on to discover more details. If an advertisement states, 'you probably won't earn much money from this business but you could do', then I for one wouldn't want to look any closer…therefore I allow for the attention grabber.

It is not until I send for the info pack that I seriously look into the opportunity. I look at every conceivable outcome. What do I have to do to make it work, does it involve a heavy investment, what can I realistically expect from it each month, do I have to work hard, does it rely heavily on me advertising it, is it totally legal and ethical…the list goes on. I have been 'hurt' by business opportunities in the past but, just as long as it wasn't my fault, I simply go on giving 'working from home' my best shot as I believe you have to fail a lot of times before you finally make it. All of the worlds most successful business entrepreneurs have failed with something in the past, it's just the successful ones that are brought to everyone's attention which makes you think, 'why can't I be like them', the answer is, you can, but you just have to keep on going until it happens. If you are dedicated enough you WILL be successful, its just a matter of when.
It doesn't matter what type of business is being offered in working from home, all of them have to grab your attention. I believe that the gentleman who wrote me the letter simply invested in the aforementioned categories no matter what, just hoping that one of them would 'be the one' and bring him in the money that he was dreaming of. A home business is the same as any other type of business but you just do it from home. You still have to work...very hard...you should enjoy what you do or it won't work, you must invest time, money and effort because there is no such thing as easy money where you sign up to a company and 'automatically' earn big cash. Lots of people new to the home business scene expect that this is the way it works, let me tell you that it doesn't, ever!.
Reasons for failing in home business are varied but the most common is that a person thinks it will be easy with little time invested and, within a few weeks or months, they would start receiving large valued cheques through the post from the company that they 'signed up' with. When they find they get very little or even nothing at all, they get disheartened and eventually give up and say that home business is a rip off.
