I've gotten several questions recently about the legalities of starting a business. So, this week I thought I would address a few of the more common legal issues most new businesses face. I rarely make any decision that has the potential to impact my business without first consulting my attorney.You can locate an attorney through legal referral services or just by opening the phone book, but the best way to find a really good attorney is to ask other business owners for references.You want an attorney who specializes in business matters. A few of the things you may need legal help with are: legal business formation, articles of incorporation, trademarks and copyrights, investment documents, employee policies, etc. You may find that a single attorney can't meet all your needs, but if you use a larger firm they will have attorneys on staff that can provide the specialized services you req
The lingo of the web, Hypertext Markup Language more commonly referred to as HTML, has grown in many ways since its creation. HTML has had to keep pace with the ever changing World Wide Web and as a result there are now several different versions of HTML.In The BeginningHypertext Markup Language was originally created to share hypertext online documentation, news, mail, hypermedia, etc. The first version of HTML was the backbone of what we now call the World Wide Web. Can you imagine the web without images? The first HTML version was not able to display graphics as it didn’t support the image tag.In the beginning there was no standardization either which meant that different browsers displayed web pages differently from each other. Even today you can see differences in web pages depending on which browser you use, but the slight differences you see today are minute compared to the first version of HTML.As you can imagine the lack of standardization created many growing pains as the World Wide Web grew in size and acceptance. As a result HTML changed to keep up with the ever growing web. In an attempt to formalize HTML, version 2 was created and was the basis for web browsers. Radio ads. Billboards. Wall Posters. Yellow pages. Pamphlets. Leaflets. Brochures. TV commercials. Newspapers ads. Magazine ads. Pop ups. Fax Outs. Hiring a fat guy to stand out on the street corner during traffic with a big sandwich board three blocks down the street from your restaurant. Pitching the media to do stories about you. Standing at a big flashy booth at a trade show giving away free pens. Blinking web ads. Direct Email. Cold calls. Direct Mail. Driving down the street, slowing down in front of pedestrians, rolling down your window and asking them, “Hey, you wanna buy a home stereo?”That last example actually happened to me last week while walking down the street in downtown Chicago. It was ridiculous!And it got me thinking: what do all of those marketing techniques have in common?A few things, really:• They suck

• They are antiquated, boring and ineffective marketing channels created around interruptionInterruption, I say!And they don’t work any more.Because people are tired of being interrupted and being YELLED AT to buy stuff.Bestselling author Seth Godin first noticed this trend in 1998. His revolutionary interview in FastCompany magazine quoted him as saying, “There's too much going on in our lives for us to enjoy being interrupted anymore. So, our natural response is to ignore the interruptions.”Gets worse.In 2004, a UCLA study reported that the average consumer sees 3000 marketing messages in one day.

Doing what you love?Here's a tip to get you started:Give away your organic produce for free!Why?Simply this: While you'd rather charge for what you grow, what you're really doing is investing in your future. See, in return for giving away a few "low~cost" items, in return you ask for a testimonial from each customer.Is that really worth it?Sure. You'll find you’ll soon have customers knocking at your door. See, often the reason why people don't buy is that they're not sure about you or you're goods.And so getting testimonials (written recommendations) provide proof that you can deliver what you say you can.For instance, what if you had a testimonial like this:"I tried some of organic food and it tasted so good! The difference between the tomatoes I normally buy is incredible. I doubt whether he’ll be able to keep up with demand round here. He certainly has a life long customer in me!”

Medical insurance can be complicated enough – for seniors, it seems the
picture is often more confusing. Most seniors don’t work and many are in ill
health or have special medical needs. And many seniors rely on government funded
assistant living facilities – an estimated 1 million seniors live in around
30,000 assisted living facilities throughout the country.
Most seniors qualify for either Medicare or Medicaid, depending on their income
and situation. Medicare is available to those who are at least 65 years old, and
have legally lived in the US for at least 5 years before applying. Medigap
insurance is supplemental health insurance taken out by some seniors as a way of
supplementing their Medicare insurance.
Medicaid is funded by the government and administered by individual states under
their department of insurance. Qualification for Medicaid also depends on an
individual’s assets, income and type of residence. Medicaid will usually cover
most or all of the costs of nursing home admission and the accompanying care
that is necessary.
Some seniors, because of a particularly low income or a specific disability, may
also qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) a program administered by
the Social Security Administration. This program offers several benefits
including providing monthly supplemental payments, food stamps and assistance
with hospital visits and drug costs.
If you don’t qualify for Medicaid, what is known as long term care insurance can
be purchased for long term stays in nursing homes or assisted living facilities.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.The Hero’s Journey:• Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.• Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.• Interpreted metaphorically, laterally and symbolically, allows an infinite number of varied stories to be created.By understanding exactly what elements make up each major stage of the Hero’s Journey, screenwriters can easily build a screenplay from the ground up.Some elements of the Call to Adventure include:Hero’s Motivations.
