    Four years ago when I announced to my friends and family that I was going to write a novel, they all looked at me like I was crazy. It was something I had always wanted to try and I did it. Envelopes, printer cartridges, paper, and postage are all expenses associated with your writing. Creative writing types might cringe at the thought of having a bookkeeping system, but it is necessary. Bookkeeping is just a fancy word for keeping a record of your incoming money (sales) and a record of the money you spend (office supplies, writing courses, etc.). I suggest you start with two manila folders. One will contain receipts from any checks you receive for your writing and the other will contain receipts from any writing related expenses you incur. In addition to keeping track of your writing income, you must also keep track of your submissions. You can set up a simple spreadsheet or database to do this. You need to record the name of the article/story submitted, publisher’s name, date of submission, as well as the status of submission. There are also tracking systems that you can purchase to help with this task which you may want to invest in as your writing business grows.

    6. FIND A NEW MARKET EACH WEEK

    Set aside a little time each week to research markets for your writing. Pick up a copy of the “Writer’s Market” or do some research on the Internet for paying markets. I keep a file of potential markets to send my writing to. When you write a new story or article, flip through your list of potential markets until you find just the right one.

    7. CONNECT WITH OTHER WRITERS

    If you worked in an office, you would have co-workers and a boss. When you write from home, you are the boss and the co-worker. You may begin to feel isolated after a while. I suggest you join a writer’s critique group, if only for a social outlet. Writing is a lonely business. Check with your local library or bookstore and see if they already have a writer’s group you can join.

    8. ATTEND A WRITER’S CONFERENCE

    Attending a writer’s conference is a great way to rev up your writing career. At a conference you will meet other writers, as well as editors and agents.
