Personalize all your e-mail messages so they get read. Include the recipient's name in the subject line. This will grab people’s attention quickly. Also be sure to include your business contact info in your signature.3. Attract more subscribers to your free e-zine by giving them free bonuses like e-books, software, online services and other incentives. It was very difficult at first to take myself seriously as a writer. I was working very hard, but I wasn’t making any money. It was more of a hobby, than a job. I squeezed in writing around preschool aged children, soccer practice and carpooling. In order for my family and friends to take my writing seriously, I had to first learn to take myself seriously. So, how do you go about taking your writing seriously?
Well, first you must remember that a writer is someone who writes. That is it. A writer “writes”. I have put together a list of ten ways to show your family, friends, and yourself that you consider yourself a writer. Here they are:
1. TAKE A CLASS
Find a class at a local community college in an area of writing that interests you. These classes are not very expensive. Usually they run about $75-$100 for an eight week course. You will meet other people interested in writing and you will learn a lot. It’s a great place to start. There are also on-line courses offered. These might be more flexible for people with tight schedules and family commitments. Barnes and Noble University is a good place to start. Go to http://university.barnesandnoble.com and look under Liberal Arts. They offer free writing courses in poetry, screenwriting, and short stories. Another website to check out is http://www.literaryworkshop.com. They offer a free seven-week workshop for writers who want to sharpen their writing skills.
2. SET UP AN OFFICE IN YOUR HOME FOR YOUR WRITING
You must have a space of your own for your writing. It doesn’t have to be big or fancy. One famous writer started out by writing in a corner of his laundry room. All you need is a table or desk, a lamp and preferably a computer. But, if you don’t have a computer, you can write by hand and type your manuscripts at the library. Some people can work surrounded by noise and chaos, but I prefer the quiet and solitude found behind a closed door. If possible, a spare bedroom with a door would make an ideal home office. Fifteen minutes of quiet writing time will be more productive than an hour with constant interruptions.
3. SET A SCHEDULE AND STICK TO IT
You must make time for your writing. If your children are small, try to find an hour or two each day when they are napping or go to preschool. If you have the luxury of writing full-time, keep a schedule. It is very easy to get distracted by unfinished household chores, errands, and outings with friends. Listen to your own natural body clock. If you are an early riser and wake up refreshed, start your writing day early in the morning. On the other hand, if you drag yourself out of bed in the mornings, you might want to focus on other writing related tasks such as record keeping and filing until you have a chance to wake up. Tell your family and friends when you will be writing and that you prefer to not be disturbed during this time. They will respect your writing time if you are firm with them.

You must be accountable to yourself if you are to succeed. It might help if you showered and dressed like you were going to work. This will also help put a visual in your family’s mind that you also work during the day even if you never leave the house. One successful writer actually dresses, gets in their car and drives around the block before coming in the back door of their house where their office is located. Maybe this helps them feel as if they are really “going to work.”
5. HAVE A BOOKKEEPING SYSTEM
You may not make much money for a while, but you can still start a bookkeeping system. You need to keep receipts for writing related expenses. Envelopes, printer cartridges, paper, and postage are all expenses associated with your writing. Creative writing types might cringe at the thought of having a bookkeeping system, but it is necessary. Bookkeeping is just a fancy word for keeping a record of your incoming money (sales) and a record of the money you spend (office supplies, writing courses, etc.). I suggest you start with two manila folders. One will contain receipts from any checks you receive for your writing and the other will contain receipts from any writing related expenses you incur. In addition to keeping track of your writing income, you must also keep track of your submissions. You can set up a simple spreadsheet or database to do this. You need to record the name of the article/story submitted, publisher’s name, date of submission, as well as the status of submission. There are also tracking systems that you can purchase to help with this task which you may want to invest in as your writing business grows.
6. FIND A NEW MARKET EACH WEEK
Set aside a little time each week to research markets for your writing. Pick up a copy of the “Writer’s Market” or do some research on the Internet for paying markets. I keep a file of potential markets to send my writing to. When you write a new story or article, flip through your list of potential markets until you find just the right one.
7. CONNECT WITH OTHER WRITERS
If you worked in an office, you would have co-workers and a boss. When you write from home, you are the boss and the co-worker. You may begin to feel isolated after a while. I suggest you join a writer’s critique group, if only for a social outlet. Writing is a lonely business. Check with your local library or bookstore and see if they already have a writer’s group you can join.
8. ATTEND A WRITER’S CONFERENCE
Attending a writer’s conference is a great way to rev up your writing career. At a conference you will meet other writers, as well as editors and agents.
