Board Committees-Is Your New Small Organization Ready For The Next Step?
When a new nonprofit is created, the founder or founder(s) generally recruit a small group of people they know and trust to help get things going. These people often wear many hats ranging from janitor to baker to teacher's aide to board member. As the organization begins to grow up, the lines become clearer between serving on the Board and volunteering in the program or office, though people will often continue to serve in multiple roles.Up to this point the Board typically has 4-8, maybe 10, members and most discussions and decisions are made by the group as a whole or default to whomever is closest to the daily operations. Eventually, the Board realizes that in order to increase the impact of the organization, it needs to ex

A Serious Warning to Business Owners
Over the past 19 years, I have worked with thousands of business owners in Africa, Canada and the United States. I foresee serious financial adversity looming for many entrepreneurs in the coming years, and perhaps a lot sooner than we may think. And before you conclude that this is mere speculation, let me share some reasons for my concern, and then allow me to offer you a solution. On a macro level, we all know that the dollar’s purchasing power has declined. The “world’s reserve currency” is in trouble. America slips further into debt. Since the end of the gold standard in 1971, this has escalated. With cheap labor increasingly available in India and China and a huge influx of new immigrants into the US and Canada, with the Canadia
Tent caterpillars create a cocoon for an entire colony. Within one colony there are two types of caterpillar. One type, pioneers, weave long threads forming the skeleton of the tent. The others, the workers, weave cross threads filling in the structure. If there are too many pioneers, the tent is too big and collapses. If there are not enough pioneers, the tent is too dense and the colony suffocates. Viva la difference.

Within the colony of human beings we can find similar differences. Some are explorers, entrepreneurs extending the boundaries of our environment in art, science, or business. The rest fill in the details as accountants or managers.

As a manager you know that creativity is the quality which enables your company to expand and improve products, services and processes. The best salespeople, strategic planners and inventors are creative people who generate a steady flow of ideas. However, creativity may come with other features which are not so desirable such as impulsiveness, lack of organization of ideas, paper, and time, and social problems in communication and relationships at work or at home.

MARY WAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL STRATEGIC PLANNER at work, but at home she couldn't clear up after dinner, her husband had to teach her how to put things away.

Put The Shoe In The Other Foot At Job Interviews
It is amazing that most future employees feel that during a job interview that they are on stage. That is they are trying to project the image to the future employer in order that they should receive a job offer and ultimately be hired by the firm.Have you ever thought of the reverse? Here you are willing to devote many years of service to an organization and perhaps they are the ones who should be examined. Not that you should antagonize and harass the interviewer but rather you should prepare and demonstrate your concern, research skills and thorough overall nature of any project you involve yourself with. Are these not the skills and attributes that good employers are endlessly searching for in the job selection pro

Branding Mistakes - Brand Identity Guru
    1. It “sells itself.” I don’t need to market.Okay, you might have a solid product or service. You might even routinely satisfy your customers. They might even send their friends and family to you. But wait. Is that your product or service selling itself? No (that is, unless your widgets have learned to speak). That’s one of your customers playing out-of-the-goodness-of-my-heart salesperson for you. Yeah, word-of-mouth is nice, and if it’s happening for you, congratulations! It’s a sign of a great product or service. But relying on it exclusively can hurt you. Yes, six degrees of separation and all that, but counting on those connecting conversations to consistently mention you, especially down the line, is a bad gamble. Word of mouth

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)* is a neurological difference in the brain which causes difficulties with the executive functions of planning, prioritizing, decision making, organizing, time management and more. It touches from 3 to 5% of the adult population ( Kevin Murphy, associate professor of psychiatry and chief adult :ADHD clinician at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester) and appears frequently in the fields where creativity is required. To state this another way: the positive asset of creativity and the negative problems are two sides of one coin.

We all feel disorganized, forgetful, or at odds with the world some of the time, but for those affected, ADD is a quality of life issue which is of long duration. One of their most common complaints is a feeling of being out of joint with their surroundings. They may feel frustrated by their own failure to achieve and deceived because they can't make effective use of their potential. They have great difficulty harnessing their many ideas and bringing them to completion.

From your point of view, as a manager, ADD can be a question of lost productivity and accidents. You probably hired them because they were passionate, intelligent, full of ideas, and had great energy (all typical qualities of ADD), but once on the job the difficulties appear
