    A Case for Data Scrubbing
Often maintenance systems don’t reap the benefits that they promise through no fault of their own. How can you expect a system to improve underlying data? The answer is that you can’t. What you need is to have good data in the system so that it can be accessed, processed and used to provide practical information for the organization.Let me illustrate the cost of not having good data with an example. A multi-site manufacturer has four locations, three of which are in fairly close proximity to each other. Each site has its own autonomous storeroom with inventory parts. At each site, there is a part time catalog manager responsible for all database activity. Because the plant is unionized and positions often change, the catalog manager may be replaced every few months.<
Examples of employee malfeasance can be better understood when broken down into basic occupation types and categories. By doing so, the underlying principles that contribute to acts of fraud, theft and embezzlement become evident: one must have access, opportunity and motivation.

    Bullet-Proof Your Business
Today’s business environment isn’t getting any easier, nor will it get easier anytime in the future. I’m not psychic but I have learned that business NEVER gets simpler. More competition, shrinking profit margins, increases in fixed and operating costs are just a few of the issues we deal with everyday. You can lament this fact or, you can take proactive measures to bullet-proof your business. Here are few strategies that can help:Clearly define your business. The most successful business people know what they are in business for. They have one or two areas of specialty or expertise and they stick to what they’re good at. They avoid the temptation to try to become everything to everybody. In many fields, specialists tend to do better than generalists and, in bookselling, it

Diesel Fuel Taking out the Sulfur
In 2006 sulfur will no longer be in diesel fuel as per legislation signed into law by President Clinton. The EPA laws will soon be effective. So you want to take the Sulfur out of Diesel Fuel? Great, but not now; we need to phase this in. Perhaps require in two years that every truck manufactured not need it, and then eliminate the fuel in six years by raising the cost slowly as trucking companies trade in old units and retrofit those before re-sold. By that time we will all be looking into other technologies anyway. Slowing down the dollar and having a weak dollar may seem like the answer to improve the impending trade deficit, but at what cost? Why should we give back all of our economic expansion because other currencies and countries cannot legitimately control their corr
