If you’re going to spend about 80,000 hours of your life at work, don’t you deserve to like some of it? When is it time to move on?I encourage customers to buy books directly from me by noting on my Web site that the books are personally signed by the author. Another author said that, although she didn't mean to offend, she didn't know why anyone would want my signature. After all, I'm not famous.Well, I didn't take offense at her observation. In fact, I was a little surprised by the phenomenon, too. The fact is that I get a lot of feedback from customers about how much they like getting an autographed book. They respond to the personal touch. Maybe they are hoping that I will become famous (or infamous!) one day, and they will be able to sell the book on eBay for a huge profit. Do you respect the people you are working for and the company you’re employed by? If not, would you want to do the same job for someone else?In using our communication skills and abilities how we say something is just as important as what we say. Body language plays an extremely important part of our communication. In fact studies have been done showing that when we interact in a communication process the receiver actually receives 7% of the message verbally. The other 93% is received based on the non-verbal aspects of the message. How we dress, our gestures, facial expressions, posture and body movements are also being received when we verbally communicate with someone. That is why it is very important that our actions and non-verbal signals match what we are saying. When our words do not match our non-verbal signals we confuse the person we are trying to communicate with. When the listener gets their signals crossed this is when misunderstanding occurs. The idea of What do I dislike the most? Do you hate the job itself, as in the duties of the job? Pinheads who are too mentally challenged to see you as a productive employee and would see your request as being a threat or a problem won’t and then you know that working for them wouldn’t ever be to your benefit. If you are working under a person who sees the value in an inspired employee though, your request for more will be met with enthusiasm and real thought. You won’t know what you could have unless you asked. Do I just hate the pay? Again, ask for more work. An employer who sees you expanding in your current position and values the extra dollars you are creating for the company will see the fairness in spreading those dollars around to you. But if you ask for more money after putting in a week of late arrivals, long lunches, multiple chain letter emails and a request for a personal day, be prepared to hear, “Are you kidding me with that?” In order to be worth more, you’ve got to give more.
